Thank you for sharing your wonderful earthwork to the class Ms. Thi. The stones that you choose are very distinct, I like how they differ in shapes and yet they connect to each other. The flat stone in the middle is just the right size and shape to hold the two small stones on top. I also admire the green leaves and the light grayish blue rocks, and the small touch of yellow flower on the right side of the photograph, the combination of the color adds drama and it gives balance to the whole picture. I liked the small little yellow flowers that you cannot see at a first glance, but when you look deeper, there you would find them like fireflies in the trees. The horizon line for me is the table on which the rocks rest, the rocks are above the eye level of the viewer.
4. Content - What do you think the artist is trying to say? What Essential Elements of Art* are used to support what you think the artist is saying?
Ms. Thi’ s earthwork expressed simplicity and strength. It seems like the artist in her would like to give the viewer the feelings of serenity and boldness at the same time. The textures of the trees in her artwork expressed the calmness and I felt the coolness of air that seems to blow the trees.
5. Realism and Abstraction - Denote the objects in the work that are realistic. Discuss the abstract quality you see in the landscape.
I would say the leaves really gives more drama in Ms. This’s earthwork. And again, the texture used from the trees to the rocks give realism and character to the picture. The abstract part in the picture would be the biggest rock at the bottom. I see some lines and holes that represents a battle scar; it seems so mysterious that it looks broken in the outside but remains strong and powerful as it holds all the rocks

Richa Bhatija caught my attention. I enjoyed looking at all the materials involved in her photo. The small area on the right side of the image where the plant is positioned balanced the large and seems an empty space of the horizon. The reflection of the sun to the rocks depicts a strong sense of movement. The vertical lines from the wood suggests stability and tallness and may give the impression of unbending principles of the artist. The proportion used from the position of the rocks, the horizon, the table and the plant provides meaning and balance to the artwork. The rhythm for me works in the interrelatedness of the rocks, the tiles on the table and the horizon. All together they gives drama and emphasis on the image which makes the viewer look and analyze what is beyond the picture. The center of interest is definitely the rocks, it is so amusing to look at how the artist stack up all in different shapes, and I am most moved at how the sun’s reflection seemed to kissed all the

Although the image seems to hard to see through that is what made the piece so interesting, it’s depiction of one object but from multiple angles creating a non-vivid image that is constantly in motion. This motion seems to create a feeling of chaos or a feeling of a constant shake throughout the piece as if the world was actually replicating this motion mid image. The piece holds a somewhat darkness to it with its gritty look. The orange and reddish…

The Green Bridge II The Green Bridge II, by Lyonel Feininger, in 1916. It is an asymmetrical abstract piece made from oil paint on a canvas. Within the painting, there are three-dimensional objects, which would appear to tell a story. What appears a very busy street loitered with many people, walking to or from somewhere. They are telling other people to watch out and run away from those big waves. People that are laying on top of the rocks were trying to be safe from the waves. Furthermore, it looks like towards the smaller rocks people were swept from the waves to the land.…

Artists often aim to tell a story when creating a piece. Whether they want to convey a message, bring up controversial topics, or teach a lesson, artists try to get an idea across to their viewers. The illustrators look to the audience to dissect what they are trying to say through their paintings and offer them up for interpretation. In his painting, Kapok Tree, Alexis Rockman tells the story of the flora and fauna that he saw while on a trip to the rainforest in Guyana. Rockman uses many techniques such as contrasting color, organization, and tone to tell his story to the audience.…

When you’re born and raised on a tiny island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, you don’t get to experience all four seasons like, colorful fall leaves, thick white snow, and blooming flowers. However, on a small island the one advantage you have is being able to watch the sunrise in the east and watch the sunset on the west all in one day. Having the ability to watch the sunrise and sunset as a child all the way up until now I have grown an obsession with nature. I love to watch the sunrise and sunset because every single one has been different from another. The first group of artists included various scenes of street landscapes with descriptive detail of the urban life, which each artist accomplished by capturing different angles to show individual perspectives. For example, Over the House Tops by Karl Struss reveal multiple brick rooftops throughout the entire composition, which shares a repetition of geometric shapes within each roof where there’s more figures underneath them. It was created using the photogravure process, which is an engraved print due to the copper plate that’s covered in light gelatin. The viewer can see endless shapes that lie in each individual structure like the rectangular bricks that hold together the roof along with the square shaped windows and the long vertical chimneys that stick out in each figure. Also, the different texture quality of the surfaces that are shown throughout this scene depict various forms of aged details in the exterior of the structures, which shows an abstraction of shapes from the positioning of the camera.…

The following lightbulb consists of some pebbles and a smaller plant with no flowers to delineate the process of rebuilding ourself after we encountering difficulties. Critical Appreciation of M.H. Abrams’s “Orientation of critical theories” M.H. Abrams’s The Mirror and the Lamp: romantic theories and the critical traditions is one of the most influential books in the field of western criticism. It was published in the year of 1953. The title of the book refers to the two contradictory metaphors used to portray the artist – one comparing the artist to a mirror that reflects nature as it is or perfected whereas the other compares the artist to a lamp that illuminates the object under consideration. Professor Abrams in his book illustrates the transition of the perspective of the theorists on the artist from one to the other and the ramifications of the latter in aesthetics, poetics and practical criticism.…
