With so many different forms of government systems, it is hard to precisely say which functions as the best system for a particular society as each population differs greatly. Thus, the question arises as one may wonder what exactly makes a system the best form of government for a nation. As the government’s main purpose is to protect the individual rights of their citizens, it only seems right that its citizens play a role in said government. Thus, democracy is the seemingly “best” form of government as it allows people to directly govern themselves or at most have a say in their government (“What is a democracy?”). Nelson Mandela once said, “An educated, enlightened and informed population is one of the surest of promoting the health of a democracy” (“Nelson Mandela”). Once again reiterating the significance of ethics and epistemology when dealing with politics. As the beliefs of individuals, do hold an influence on their preferred form of government. For instance, a more religious individual would more likely prefer a theocracy where God governs the government (Perry et al.). Primarily speaking, if a government cannot provide some sense of safety for its citizens then its population would not have much hope in their government and probably rebel from it. Thus, a government must have some type of a military defense to insure protection of its citizens and be able to maintain domestic order within their nation to essentially provide a peace of mind for its citizens. Next, a good government must protect the civil liberties of its citizens as outlined within their society. In the United States, particularly we have the U.S. Constitution that outlines the preservation of our basic rights such as freedom of speech and religion. Therefore, a good government would uphold said basic rights of its citizens by preserving their civil liberties. In addition, another function of a good government deals with the administration of justice in which the government enforces the law and punishes evil and wickedness. Also providing insurance of peace and safety for its citizens, as they know that if someone murders an individual the right actions will be taken to insure not only justice but also peace for others within the society.
