Is Odysseus the Definition of Hero? Odysseus- the son of Laertes, king of Ithaca, hero of ancient times- was highly regarded by many. But in this new generation, what is he now? Today, is he still the hero he was all those years ago? Most may say no. But, when you really think about it, he still has qualities the heroes of modern day have.
Odysseus had obtained a quality that modern day heroes seem to always have as well- courage. He used this courage to fight for his son, wife and to remain as the rightful king of Ithaca. In Homer’s The Odyssey, Odysseus had found the courage within himself to stand up and fight against the suitors that were courting his wife and planning to kill his son. With this power, he was able to defeat any of his foes. This not only enabled him to defeat his opponents, but to also protect the ones he loved from the suitors. With the aid of the gods, Odysseus had much power; Odysseus even shows how much he trusts the gods to protect him and give him the power he needs to win when he says this in Homer’s The Odyssey, part “Twenty years gone, and I am back again…” Lines 1109-1111: “`I’ll tell you now. Suppose Athena’s arm is over us, and Zeus her father’s, must I rack my brains for more?”Odysseus used that power for the greater good at that time. Odysseus had been a good leader here, clearly thinking through consequences of certain actions, and choosing the best course of action for their situation.
