Deception In Relationship Analysis

The person I chose to interview for the second assignment was my mother, Casey Pike. I chose to interview my mother because I have witnessed her deceive my father and sometimes have been involved in the lie. Growing up both my parents worked and my family was fortunate enough to not have to worry about financial problems. My senior year of high school my father suddenly lost his job and it affected his way of thinking about money. Since then, he has gotten a new job, but with the fluctuating oil and gas business he has become extremely tight with money despite the fact that we now have the money to spend it more freely. My father’s obsession with saving money has led to my mother to start working a second job where she is only paid in cash so that she can spend it without leaving a paper trail. Often times my mother will buy things for me and my brother and tell us to hide it from our father or if she orders something online she will have it shipped to her work address so he does not see the packages.
During the interview my mother discusses that hiding her spending from my father is easier than talking about it and possibly starting a conflict. This concept of avoiding discussions about problems is a dyadic process …show more content…
The reading describes an understatement as “downplaying accepts of the truth”( ). In the interview, my mother talks about a BCBG dress she bought me over fall break. The dress was pretty expensive, so instead of putting the entire cost on our credit card she paid for half of it in cash and charged the other half. She did not lie to my father about buying me a new dress, but instead just downplayed how much it cost.
