Super Heroes In the Schools Exhibit: 25 schools and over 300 students ages 6 to 19 will be challenged to create representations of real "super heroes" they know and admire. Professional artists will serve as role models and mentors working with young students to explore culture, history and traditions, and stimulate creativity using a broad range of artistic techniques and materials. Each year, we present local artists, guest lecturers and young people from the community for a popular exhibition of altares and ofrendas honoring the dead. Additionally, CCA presents hands-on workshops on papel picado, papel mache, and sugar skulls facilitated by community artists, and exploring the history and symbolism of this cultural festivity.
El Segundo de Febrero: This exhibit and floricanto (music and spoken word) event pays tribute to the signing of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo in 1846, which marked the beginning of the Mexican American as a political entity in the United States. Students, community artists, poets, and musicians create and present new works honoring the diverse contributions of Mexican Americans in the arts and other fields.
Low Rider Festival: This aesthetic encounter bonds art with culture, attracting over 3,000 residents and visitors each year to appreciate the work of a unique segment of over 100 local and regional barrio artists. In an outdoor display at the historic Mateo Camargo Park, artists exhibit their once factory-standard vehicles that have been transformed into rolling murals and overall works of art.
