Irion County Irion County is situated on the Edwards Plateau in southwest central Texas. The middle of Irion is thirty-one degrees and eighteen inches north latitude and one hundred degrees and thirty-five inches west longitude. Irion is locked in between Reagan, Crockett, Schleicher, and Tom Green Counties. The county has two major roadways running through it, U.S. Highway 67 and State Highway 163. U.S. Highway 67 connects the county of Irion to the county seat, which is Mertzon. Irion county was formed on March 7th 1889 and a little over a month later was organized and named Irion County to recognize Robert Anderson Irion. They have a walking mural tour. Each mural gives a little bit of the history of the town. People use them as things to find in scavenger hunts or just to get familiar with the history and story of the town. One of the biggest events in Mertzon is attending the school football games at Irion High School, home of the Hornets. When they are off season the next best thing to do is go fishing at the local lake, Lake Nasworthy. Although Barnhart is one of the smaller populated cities in Irion it is known for its ranches. If you are looking to take a hunting trip in west Texas the LP ranch is one you might consider. They have scheduled deer hunts every year. Irion county is not large in population compared to other counties in Texas but is rich in history and events.
Through the research about Irion County I have learned so much about how it has played a role in Texas history. The land is full of ranches and wildlife and has one of the best climates in the state! They have been part of the battles during the civil war and pioneers of postal routes across the state. They may not have a large population of people but create fun activities in a small quaint way making Irion a great place to
