Imagine, you are born only to live for only a few short days or weeks and then die a painful death due to organ failure. Would you be okay with that? Of course not, but this is the reality for some poor animals that are born as products of genetic engineering. Over 9 million animals are brought up each year in cramped conditions, wrought with deformities (Rifkin). There are also risks of mass reproduction as a result of growth hormones. This can also contribute to the cramped conditions most animals live in. Most people know about these what these animals are going through, but they don’t want to acknowledge it because it’s too uncomfortable to talk about. Nevertheless, it is …show more content…
In the 1990’s, a documentary was released to the public depicting failed genetic engineering experiments. A piglet had been born arthritic, cross-eyed, and lethargic along with many other animals who suffered similar aberrancies (Rifkin). Many animals suffer birth defects without the influence of a lab poking and prodding at their genes. Some genetic engineers are adding to this quantity by playing what equates to genetic Russian-Roulette. Animals who are bred to grow a large amount in a short time often suffer deformities. The now common Broiler chicken will sometimes suffer painful leg deformities as a result of its weight (Rifkin). Their weight increases too rapidly and their legs are not meant to hold so much weight, so they bend and buckle as the chicken grows. Without genetic engineering in the United States of America’s livestock industry, there would not be an entire breed of chickens that are genetically cursed to be in …show more content…
Genetic engineering has been shown to cause fatal birth defects and deformities in animals, harm the animal’s quality of life, and make individual treatment of animals almost impossible.the failed experiments, the needless suffering, and the overpopulation cause unnecessary animal distress. Every year, thousand of genetically altered animals die of birth defects, disease, and mistreatment. Their suffering can end if we choose to let them live their lives
