Abstract This paper will summarize Kaplan & Gladding’s 2011 article A Vision for the Future of Counseling: The 20/20 Principles for Unifying and Strengthening the Profession. The article discusses the background of the 20/20 principles that were listed in the Vision for the Future of Counseling. The history behind the paper is given, as well as the importance of the vision. The background on how the vision came to be is discussed. The seven areas of needed improvement for the counseling profession are listed. The organizations involved are discussed, as well as their agreement or disagreement with the areas. Summary Kaplan & Gladding (2011) start out by describing the first meeting of 20/20: A Vision for the Future of Counseling in their article titled A Vision for the Future of Counseling: The 20/20 Principles for Unifying and Strengthening the Profession. They go on to describe the historical precedents set by two other meetings that were concerned with the future of counseling. These meetings were the 1988 meeting of three counselor educators at the Association for Counselor Education and Supervision (ACES) conference and the 1998 meeting held by Chi Sigma Iota (CSI). The results of these two meetings are described and what they meant for counseling as a profession is explained to the reader. The first committee for 20/20: A Vision for the Future of Counseling, known as the “oversight committee” is then discussed as well as the role they played in writing it. The 30 organizations that were invited to send delegates to the committee were then listed in alphabetical order; all 30 chose to send a delegate. We all need to be aware of the future of the profession and what the profession needs to do to ensure that future. The historic meetings described in the article where interesting to read about, especially because it means that the future of counseling has been a concern for that long. The time spent and the process of coming up with 20/20: A Vision for the Future of Counseling was interesting to me as well. I like learning the history behind how important documents and events came to be, and this is an important document for me and anyone in my chosen
