The first concept to be discussed is, development is dynamic and shaped by interactions between biology and experience. What does this mean? Two children living in the same house with the same environment will be affected differently because even though the environment is the same, their biology is different. Different environments bring out different attributes in different children. A certain behavior can be adapted in some situations and not in others. It’s all about how your biology reacts with the environment (Neurons to Neighborhoods). In Laura E. Berk’s book, Infants, Children, and Adolescents, she explains the goodness of fit model. This model explains how a child’s temperament and their environment can yield great results. In order to have goodness of fit parents need to know their child’s temperament so they can find ways to encourage their child to be more adaptive, and so they can use the best way to discipline (Berk). A lot of times difficult children have parents who don’t know how to deal with them, so they experience a parenting style that doesn’t fit with their disposition. The parents tend to react with anger and punitive discipline and in return …show more content…
The second core concept is, culture influences human development in every way. It’s shown in how people raise their children and the practices they use to encourage healthy adaptation. Culture affects what the children eat and when, what parents worry about, when children are exposed to certain things, what they are taught, etc (neurons to neighborhoods). This concept goes hand in hand with the first concept that was discussed, but focuses more on the environment part, specifically culture. The theorist L.S Vygotsky was a huge promoter of culture and how social contexts shape children’s development. He explains that without knowing about our historical background and being able to build on things that are taught in our culture, the human race wouldn’t develop very far. If each new generation was placed in an isolated setting with no adults around to teach them, then they would be no better off then the very first cave men. Children benefit immensely from the knowledge and tools given to them by their culture (Crain). There are many examples all over the world that show the difference between children in different cultures. For example, the Chinese culture use to great value shyness. They would praise shy children, and therefore many more children were shy. Recently though, a change has happened in China. They’re becoming more economically advanced and therefore need their children to be more
