Controversy About Video Games

In today’s world there is a lot of controversy regarding video games and the people who play them. The argument has been investigated in depth by Social Scientists, Psychologist, Psychiatrists, and Neurobiologist for over a decade. This paper is my thoughts on the research that the last decade has imparted. Video games are everywhere in today’s modern age. Everywhere from on computers and certain type of game console all the way to our phones and music playing devices - but is it really possible that these games can lead to the real world violence we witness all around us every single day? I think not. However with games on the market like Grand Theft Auto, and Gears of war or anything like this, it is easy to see how the media might develop …show more content…
In most cases, the answer would be a yes and usually, following this they play things that seem, in their entirety, to be extremely violent games. As Markey, Markey, and French say in their article.. “...Three of the major school shootings were analyzed, and in all three cases the shooters played violent games.” (Markey, Markey, French, 2014) It is infact a very common belief that if something happens, the root must have been the games a person has played over their lifetimes. According to an article by Christopher A. Oswald, Chris Prorock, and Shane M. Murphy; video games are actually a good way to create and maintain friendships. “Many people emphasized that they play the video games only with someone else. Weather it be against someone as a competition or playing with them to help better their chances, they’ve all said it was a way of maintaining a level of friendship.” (Oswald, Prorock, Murphy, 2013-2014) Now, speaking as someone who plays video games myself, I can agree with what they have been writing about.
