Repetitive Concussions Are No Joke Concussions affects between 2 million and 4 million athletes each year. Just about everybody knows someone who has had one. In the past decade or so, chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) has been found to be different from the original condition resembling Alzheimer’s disease (AD) in professional boxers to a newer, different condition that is seen in athletes, military personnel, and civilians that share many features with known psychiatric disorders and other forms of dementia.
The studies of CTE have a huge limitation because they have a lack of operational criteria to confirm either a clinical or pathological diagnosis of CTE (Gardner). This horrible disease …show more content…
One known cause of CTE exists, and that is repetitive blunt trauma to the brain or a commonly known as a concussion. This trauma not only incudes the major concussions with the massively obvious side effects, but also the sub concussive hits to the head that have no noticeable side effects. This is dangerous for athletes because they already have the urge and pressure to compete while injured, but this is too dangerous for them to risk. In the past couple of years, education for concussions has increased, but that has yet to prove a significant change in behavior of the student athlete.
The alarming rate that concussions are increasing in athletes of all sports is cause for concern. This rate needs to be reduced because a history of concussion is proven to reduce neuropsychological performance on tests, it affects a large number of student athletes, and can lead to CTE …show more content…
Forget reduced interest and ad revenue, concussions will end the NFL eventually. The National Football League Players Association (NFLPA) will eventually phase out all of helmet hitting to the point where the spot is not the same anymore. The problem of this is that the NFL knows that these concussions are dangerous, but refuse to enact any major rule changes based on the fear of reduced ratings. They are also afraid of the publicity of this problem because future parents might shy their kids away from football because of the danger of head
