What is a concussion? A concussion is a brain injury caused by a blow to the head of violent shaking of the body. Many different things can cause and prevent concussions. Three different things that can prevent a concussion in football is form tackling, Smart Helmets, and mouth guards.
To better understand how form tackling, Smart Helmets, and mouth guards can prevent concussions we must first consider the opposition. Some argue that nothing can help prevent concussions. "Helmets are 85% as good as there going to get" (Wilson). Helmets can not get any better than they already are. If football players are still getting concussions with the helmets nothing can prevent it.
One reason concussions in football can be prevented is because of form tackling. Form tackling is a certain way to tackle using technique and safety. Jeff Miller the NFL's senior Vice President of Health and Safety Policy conducted a study of how form tackling affects football players getting concussions. Kate Wheeling who is apart of the Sporting and Athletic Goods Manufacturing Company said "magnets in the helmet, to avoid head to head collision" (Wheeling). It states that using these lightweight magnets in the helmets, it can create a repulsive magnetic force around the football players. This force helps reduce head injuries. Adding on to that the American Football International researchers at the University of Washington have collaborated with the helmet development companies to provide football players with a new and improved helmet. "Incorporates head length and breadth measurements also the head circumference" (AFI). It absorbs the impact like a car bumper. It was designed to give cushion to the head but also it slows the force of the hits thanks to technology. Smart Helmets should be worn by every football player to help prevent
