Junior Seau. Ryan Freel. Derek Boogard. These are some of the names of professional athletes who have died from head injuries in football, baseball, and hockey, respectively. In all professional sports, concussions have demanded the commissioners and player safety officials to adopt new penalties and rules to attempt to overcome and prevent these head injuries. Concussions are not as common in baseball as they are in football and hockey, but they are becoming a dangerous occurrence, severely endangering every athlete. Even a minor concussion can be career threatening and precaution is needed every time, but the problem is that there is not enough being done to help athletes avoid concussions. It is appalling that almost half of all adults believe that nothing needs to be done to help prevent concussions. A Washington Post Poll showed that 46% of all adults either do not care or think nothing needs to be done in the NFL for head injuries (Clement 1). Traumatic brain injuries are serious because after suffering from a certain number of concussions, the athlete may need to reconsider playing the sport due to the Second-impact syndrome effect. In years to come, more consequences for the players delivering illegal hits leading to the concussions need to be adopted. Although commissioners and trainers make their best effort to keep their players on the field, there are plenty more ideas for modifying concussions. In each sport, rules are implanted to attempt to keep the number down and decrease it each year, but every year there are always players suffering in each sport with a severe head injury. Last football season, Green Bay Packers star tight end, Jermichael Finley, caught a pass over the middle and had a devastating head on collision with the linebacker of the Cincinnati Bengals. One week later, Finley said that all he could see after the injury were bodies, no heads or legs, and his body was on fire.
