The Reflection Of Computer Mediated Communication With Different Students In Class

Decent Essays
On the first day of class when I found out that we were going to be “forced” to communicate with different students in class, I wasn’t sure how I felt about it. After looking back at last semester and how some of my best friends up here were made was through some of my classes. This realization is what led me to having an open mind about this assignment. Computer mediated communication is definitely an interesting concept because you never know who is on the other side of the device. For me, it turned out that the person on the other side was someone who lived on the same floor as I did and I didn’t know. That person was Sherelle Smith. When any kind of relationship develops, there is a certain amount of uncertainty about the person you are …show more content…
This conversation was a basic intro. We exchanged what our friends called us and how we can go about communicating. Taking the first step helped reduce the amount od uncertainty as to who was going to break and send the first message. Once we established a basic understanding of each other and established how we were going to communicate (text messaging), everything fell into place. From this moment on we texted each other on four other different occasions. Each time we tried to reduce whatever uncertainty was still there. We established that we were both freshmen, live close by in New York City, and found out that we live on the same floor in our dorm. Discovering these different aspects about each other helped reduce whatever uncertainty there was between …show more content…
I’ll be honest, I’m a horrible person to talk to over computer mediated communication. Not because I will take forever to reply, but because I rely on the other person to help carry a conversation. If a person is busy, its hard to carry out a conversation with them. This might have been the case with Sherelle. It seemed as if every time I contacted her one of us was either preoccupied or busy. This didn’t really help when it came to opening up and sharing a little about us to each other. Once we were together talking in the face to face encounter, Social Penetration was easier. I feel like after that encounter, we knew each other on a completely different level. We talked for about 45 minutes to an hour and shared certain aspects of our lives. None of this was awkward at all. Being able to communicate over text before meeting each other had a huge impact on that and allowed for Social Penetration theory to work

On the campus of MCC a crisis is looming like the shadow of a storm. The perceived benefit of technology on campus is about to come crashing into reality as professors and students alike are faced with the harrowing truth about what new technology really does to a campus, specifically online functionalities. Manhattan Christian College finds itself on an interesting and unique spectrum of colleges as a private university with a strong base in the Christian religion. As it stands, MCC stands on the cusp of a new era in education, and as new methods of education and interaction among students and professors are introduced into a long-standing system of books-and-paper teaching, a radical shift will begin. If those on campus do not control how…

For the first major assignment for Professor Julia Green’s Communication 211 for Spring 2016, I partnered with classmates Lori Rainey and Sarah Beattie to “analyze how the different forms of communication yield different results when it comes to communicating” (Green, Week 4 - Major Assignment 1: Blog). By going through the exercises, I have reconfirmed that the form of online communication best suited to me is email versus social media such as Facebook, or texting. Unlike some people, I find texts are more difficult to respond to for many reasons, including the limitation of the touch-screen keypads, as well as the synchronicity of the communication, depending on the user’s attention to their phone. As an example, I routinely forget my cell…

Too much just a recap and sharing feelings, With a text … I can answer on my own time”(Turkle 377). When texting, in her mind she feels that she is able to direct the way on a conversation, in other words lead it towards to where ever she wants the conversation to go. For example, to her she supposes that texting offers protection due to the fact that you have time to think about what you want to say and with a phone call you have to reply immediately and must keep it progressing. Also, she believes that she is able to quickly change a conversation while texting if she does not like where the conversations is leading to. This argument is effective because Sherry believes that “you can present yourself the way you want to be seen” (Turkle…

Mediated communication and face to face communication are often argued about. Some try to figure out which works better and which makes you a better person. One can give supportive messages either way, though. An example of a time when I gave supportive messages via social networking was when I was about twelve years old. My mother had just allowed me to get an Instagram account, and I was ecstatic, up until I began exploring the app.…

A new study shows that today’s teenage generation is less likely to succeed due to technology being too easy to access. As a student born in this generation, I know that it’s easy to look up a question, find an answer, then copy and paste it as your own work. Social media being so easy to access on any type of device, leads to students getting distracted, unfocused, and lazy in class. As a student, I am constantly noticing my cohort flicking through their Instagram feed, and liking/commenting on a range of different posts.…

I took two classes for the summer of 2016, but the Interpersonal Communication class had me worried the most. I had a training with the army, and that required me to absence from school for two weeks. Unlike my other class, I didn’t have a chance to work ahead of the class with the instructor for the two weeks that I would be missing. Therefore, I was worried that I wouldn’t catch up with my classmates and end up failing the class. However, Ms. Anna was generous and extended the assignment due date for me; she even gave me an extra-credit assignment to replace the credits that I missed during my two weeks in training.…
