The filmed version of Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry has several similarities, as well as many differences, from the novel. For example, in the novel, Stacey, on the way to school, is given a paper comprised of cheat notes by T.J.. Stacey rips up the paper into several pieces and throws them into the gully. T.J makes new notes at noontime, and Stacey sees them during the exam. He motions T.J to put them away, but as Mama is coming, he slips them to Stacey. Mama sees the cheat notes, and questions Stacey about them. Of course Stacey wouldn't tell on T.J., and Mama whips Stacey and fails both T.J. and Stacey on the exam. After school, Stacey goes down to the Wallace store and fights T.J to the ground. Mr. Morrison comes to the store, in a mule wagon, and confronts Stacey about the incident. Stacey tells Mama that he disobeyed her and went to …show more content…
is in jail, and will most likely be going to the chain gang. In both the movie and in the novel, it starts to rain, and the fire starts to subside. The novel gives readers a little more insight, as we know that Papa started the fire to make Mr. Granger stop the hanging. However, in the movie, it explains that T.J. is hurt, but not that Papa started the fire to stop the hanging of T.J. Avery, as Big Ma explains that the lightning must have started it. We know in both the novel and in the movie that Cassie feels bad for T.J., even though he has not been the best person to hang around, especially for Stacey. We know as both readers and watchers of the movie that Cassie feels bad. Cassie feels that T.J should not be in jail. She does not want him to go on the chain gang and possibly die, because of R.W. and Melvin Simms (Wallaces in the movie). To add on, a similarity between the novel and the movie is that Jeremy Simms (Wallace in movie) comes over to the house, and reassures Little Man (Clayton Chester) and the other Logan kids that Big Ma, Stacey, Papa, and Mr. Morrison were all

In Chapter One of Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry, Mildred Taylor depicts Little Man as a boy who wants to be clean, representing his wanted equality and fairness in society. The author shows us Little Man’s desire for equality through his actions, an example being the rejection of the dirty book he was given on the first day of school. Little Man expresses his hatred for the insult to his race in his tattered book and stomps on it, refusing to use it “his face clouded, changing from sulky acceptance to puzzlement.. [he flung] the book onto the floor and [stomped] madly on it” (ROTHMC 24). The teacher, Miss Crocker, does not agree with his behavior, though it was ethical, which leads to him getting a whipping.…

In the novel, Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry, the setting affects the story and characters in various different ways . As I was reading through the novel, I noticed so many pieces of text related to “separate but equal”, and the terrible acts that were done to black citizens in the South as a result of racism, and very deep racial feelings towards African-Americans. For example, in the text on page. 15, it states, “Sitting so close to the desk, I could see that the covers of the books, a motley red, were badly worn and the grey edges of the book were marred by pencils, crayons and ink. My anticipation at having my own book dubbed to a sinking disappointment.”.…
