In my choice novel March toward the Thunder by Joseph Bruchac, a boy named Louis Nolette who is an Abenaki Indian from Canada that joins the Fighting 69th Irish brigade known for being strong in battle. Louis at the age of 15, joins the Union army in 1864, a few years before the end of the American Civil War. He joins the war for two reasons the first one is that he agrees with them in the fact that slavery is not a right thing to do, he thinks that it is wrong for someone to be able to own a person. Some joined because they were like Louis and either wanted slavery to end or wanted the good wages that the Union promised. Some were forced to enlist in the army, others wanted to look brave others either wanted to follow their dad and/or brother or their parents forced them to join the Union army. At one point in the story Louis is at the outskirts of his divisions camp and he is leaning against a tree when a Confederate soldier comes up and lays his back up against the other side of the tree and rather that try to kill each other Louis the Union soldier and the Confederate solider had a pretty muched civilised conversation. Some of historically accurate technology that this novel has is the muskets they use during their battles, they cannons they blasted at each other, they used forts to protect them from the blasts from the Confederate army, they also rode on horseback into battle. The culture they had that was the same as back then was that only men went to do their jobs while the women stayed home and did all the house work and tended to the children and that children stay home and worked as well.
