Theme: communication. Discuss the importance of both: SPEAK and THE MIRACLE WORKER.

The books/movies of Speak and The Miracle Worker have the same basic theme… Communication. This theme is very important. In the book/movie Speak, the main character, Melinda, had to deal with the struggles of not speaking out when she was raped. She suffered horribly because of it. She was dealing with the problem in the wrong way instead of handling it properly. However, when she finally spoke about the incident her life changed for the better. She began to cope as she began to COMMUNICATE. Communication was the main key to her “survival”. Without breaking the silence, she would have perished in pain and self-doubt. Yet, it proved to be realistic for millions of girls, be it the incident itself or the internal conflict and depression rape carries. Therefore, I believe that Speak is a realistic representation of an adolescent experience. However, I also believe that how realistic it is and how many people relate to it is not the purpose of the novel. Speak exists to allow vulnerable victims a safe haven of courage and validation. It can show people like Melinda that there is someone who shares their experiences, thoughts, and feelings; that they are normal and it isn't their fault; that they, too, can speak up.…

The big idea that I get from this book is that some burdens are just to big and the only was to handle them is together. The problem is that so many people are ashamed and would rather hide it that handle the situation. For the first major assignment for Professor Julia Green’s Communication 211 for Spring 2016, I partnered with classmates Lori Rainey and Sarah Beattie to “analyze how the different forms of communication yield different results when it comes to communicating” (Green, Week 4 - Major Assignment 1: Blog). By going through the exercises, I have reconfirmed that the form of online communication best suited to me is email versus social media such as Facebook, or texting. Unlike some people, I find texts are more difficult to respond to for many reasons, including the limitation of the touch-screen keypads, as well as the synchronicity of the communication, depending on the user’s attention to their phone. As an example, I routinely forget my cell…

I think Amy Cuddy’s speech on non-verbal communication was interesting. The thing that I found most interesting was the high power and low power poses. I think many people don’t realize others can perceive their poses or non-verbal communication in many different ways, for instance, in the video she says a simple handshake or an awkward interaction can communicate a message about what you’re feeling to other people. I know I often display a low power pose to make myself feel more comfortable, I think what surprised me the most was that the low power pose could actually make you feel less confident. I think peoples non-verbal communication can really say a lot about what they’re feeling.…

John Hughes wrote and directed the cult-like movie which is set in the 1980s called the Breakfast Club. The movie is about high school students that all do something wrong during school and end up in a day-long Saturday detention with an extremely strict principal that has them work towards a single goal. Throughout the movie the interaction among the different characters is very interesting and eye opening about how people can learn to get along and to communicate, The diversity of the group, variations between and among people, is easy to recognize as it consists of Claire who is the popular school princess, Andrew the big school jock, John Bender the bad boy, Brian the brainiac, and Allison the school outcast and basket case. The group seems to be in culture shock, the psychological discomfort of adjusting to a new cultural situation, at the start of the day since the five students are pretty much strangers to each other.…

There are also parts to this book linking to courage. There were times where characters would try to encourage other characters to do things to help them in their life. The fifth chapter of Interplay centers itself around the principle of language, and how it so greatly effects interpersonal communication. One of the concepts that stuck out to me from this chapter was the nature of language, and how language is rule-governed. There are both phonological rules and syntactical rules, which respectively mean “how sounds are combined to form words” and “the way symbols can be arranged,” which are simply how the language is organized and interpreted to their speakers (Adler, Rosenfeld, Proctor, 2015, pg. 141). There are also semantic rules, which “govern our use of the language,” in other words, “the meaning of statements” (Adler et. al, 2015, pg. 141).…

Charismatic Communicators There are many charismatic communicators around the world. Many are now dead and left a legacy of being a charismatic communicator and others well they are on their way. The definition of Charismatic is “Spiritually endowed; divinely inspired or having power to command” (The Readers Digest Great Encyclopedia Dictionary622). Another definition of charismatic is “A spiritual gift or talent regarded as divinely granted to a person as a token of grace and favor and exemplified in early Christianity by the power of healing, gifts of tongues, or prophesying” (Seven Language Dictionary744).…

Everyone has different strengths and weaknesses. As a result of my aptitude to convey ideas well, communication is one of my most prevalent skills. In addition, my ability to understand the situations of others makes empathy a strong suit. Conversely, I am deficient in having courage to stand up for what is right. Though I have a hard time showing courage, communication and empathy are my clearest strengths, resulting in a determination to stand up to peer pressure.…
