Effective Communication In The Movie 'Radio'

The movie "Radio" takes place in South Carolina, in the 1970's. The main character James Kennedy, or Radio, is a boy who has an Intellectual Disability, and doesn't attend school. He walks by the football practice field daily, and watches the team practice. One afternoon after practice coach Jones notices his basket is abandoned, and the team throwing footballs against the field house. He walks in to find Radio tied up, crying in the corner. This is where their friendship begins. At first Radio is quiet and shy, but as the movie progresses, he comes out of his shell when coach Jones invites him to essentially become a part of the team. Once football season is over, he becomes a part of the basketball team. Again, one of the boys who had previously tied him up in the field house, tells him the girls basketball coach needs his assistance, and he walks in on the locker room full of girls after basketball practice. Throughout the movie, the dad's of the players meet in the barber shop to discuss the games and drink coffee. The father of the son that continues to give Radio a hard time doesn't like the idea of a "Retarded boy" being in school with his son.
