In today’s society the majority of the crimes are still being committed by people who have possessed a firearm that has been obtained illegally or without proper permits. That being said there has been a strong push for gun control because of the rise of shootings involving a large group of people such as the Columbine massacre, Virginia Tech shooting and latest Aurora movie theater shooting involving people who have purchased firearms legally. Gun control laws in the United States have been established for many years but to maintain a civilized society with limited crime stronger control laws need to be enforced in which will help reduce crime in our country. Effective Laws
The third step in providing stricter gun laws is having state legislators create tougher punishments for people who commit crimes involving firearms. “Community education and action are also critical to achieving smart gun laws and policies. By making complex legal and policy issues understandable, conducting legal research, analyzing existing and emerging policy strategies, and generating model regulations, this helps educate communities, and empowers governments to pursue effective measures that are legally defensible” (Hira. M. 2012 p.1). These laws should include longer sentences, reducing opportunity for parole and if a juvenile is involved they are to be tried as an adult for involving a firearm. These types of punishments should be created in hopes of making society aware of the dangers and consequences that are involved with firearms. As stated by the law center of gun control “We all deserve to live in communities free from the fear and threat of gun violence. Everyone has a right to his and her second amendment right and enact smart laws that will reduce death and injury from firearms”. (NCPA. 2012 p.4) The next law that should be put into effect is making it mandatory that gun related courses are taken before purchasing a firearm. Gun safety courses are meant to avoid
