1. Who was Matthew, and why was he qualified to write a book in the Bible?
1. Matthew was a tax collector who became a disciple of Jesus (Strauss, 2011, p. 5531). It is believed that he wrote the book of Matthew. He was more than qualified to write a book in the Bible because “as a tax collector, Matthew no doubt would have been proficient in both Aramaic and Greek” and would have been highly organized. Furthermore, he was one of Jesus’ twelve thus, he knew Jesus personally and likely captured numerous personal encounters with Jesus (Strauss, 2011, p. 5549). Specifically the book of Matthew reveals the “skilled literary” artistry and carefully structured design that someone of Matthew’s caliber would have (Strauss, 2011, p. 4664).
2. What is the main theme of the Book of Matthew, and how does it differ from the other Gospels?

The main theme of the Book of Matthew is “Jesus the Jewish Messiah brings salvation history to its climax, saving his people from their sins” (Strauss, 2011, p. 4631). Matthew heavily focuses on the fulfillment of Old Testament hopes and the transcendent Lord unlike his gospel counterparts. It differs from the other gospels because Mark’s main theme is “the suffering Son of God”, Luke’s theme is Jesus as “the Savior for all people” and John’s theme is Jesus as “the eternal Son of God” (Strauss, 2011, p. 4631). All of which arrive to the same message with a differing focused theme.
