Michelangelo’s sculpture the Pieta for instance is in the shape of a pyramid. Mary’s head forms the highest point is serving as the vertex for the remain portions of the sculpture. Another unique aspect of the physicality and structure is Mary’s body figure. She is substantially bigger than Christ is. The physical reason why the proportions are off is that Michelangelo has to depict Christ as a fully-grown man in the lap of a woman who could physically look like she could support him. Last, the structural reason is that the weight of each figure had to be unevenly distributed so one can support the other structurally. Michelangelo in a creative way disguises this with Mary’s body and the drapery from her clothing. The drapery is very overlapping, long and wide which helps masks how large Mary’s physicality is to Christ. The disguise of the drapery helps Mary seem more natural in size and a viewer would discern the fact that she is substantially bigger structurally than Christ is as
