Michelangelo’s pieta has been researched comprehensively on different subjects ranging from why he signed this piece only, about the missing leg of Christ, and the draping wet-cloth look on the drapes of Christ and Mary. However, the most important question that has been researched is to figure out why this piece is the best piece he has carved compared to his other works as well as other art pieces done by different sculptors. Scholars such as Joanna E. Many evidence including an essay by William E Wallace uses many factors to suggest that Michelangelo’s Pieta is truly the best art work Michelangelo has done. Another evidence is written by the very first art historian. In his book, Vasari quotes Michelangelo’s’ Pieta and his genius “which in beauty and magnificence, abundance of ornamentation and richness of statuary, surpassed every ancient or imperial tomb.”(Vasari 324). This quote explains that the pieta can be compared to the ancient fascinating tombs. This include the great pyramids at Giza, the burial mound of Newgrange in County Meath, Ireland and the Terracota Army of Qin Shi Huangdi. All of these tombs have a unique aspect that makes them magnificent in their own way however, Michelangelo’s Pieta is different because it is basically an art piece made of stone yet looks alive and well. All the emotions and verism that goes into this art work is one of the evidence as to why this part piece is the best artwork Michelangelo has ever made.
