Compare And Contrast Tessie Hutchinson And The Hunger Games

Jack Woodford once said, “Characterization is an action that flows out of action and dialogue.” As a writer back in the 30’s and 40’s Woodford wrote an extraordinary amount of non-fiction, so he knows what it takes to be a well-liked character in either a story or a movie. Whether it’s being a hero in a movie, or a sacrifice from a small village, these are two things that Katniss Everdeen and Tess Hutchinson had to endure throughout their life. The life that these two characters lived are what formed them into who they are in their story. Although both of those characters seem different, both Katniss and Tessie Hutchinson display a tremendous amount of the same characteristics. On the other hand Tessie Hutchinson is in the drawing for The Lottery, which is a drawing to see which person gets stoned in their village. After Katniss gets selected to compete in the Hunger Games, she was taken to the capital where she was trained to survive. While in training she worked on her fighting, archery, and survival skills, which are all necessary to win the hunger games. Coming out of district twelve she was considered the underdog because that district is very poor. She uses that motivation to prove that she is the true hero in The Hunger Games. After she won The Hunger Games she was considered, “a heroic figure focused on her true self and the greater good. Katniss shows many characteristics that a hero needs in order to achieve greatness, where as, Tessie is just a normal person, living a normal life, hoping for life to go on as it usually does. Both these ladies lives are interrupted when all of a sudden they are both faced with fighting for their life, but Tessie doesn’t come out as good as Katniss. Though Katniss had better preparation for The Hunger Game then Tessie had for The Lottery, Tessie really was never given an opportunity to survive, where as Katniss got the chance to fight for her life. In the fight for their lives, both Katniss and Tessie display similar characteristics, that they use in order to survive. Both these women disagreed with their events that they were experiencing, and stood up for what they believe in.
