Leadership and Management are two words in the business world that continue to fuel debates. According to Schedlitzki and Edwards “opinions indicate a similarity evident over the years, in the ambiguity surrounding the concepts of leadership and management”. The distinction between a leader and a manager can be the defining difference between an outstanding organization and one that is stands in the land of mediocrity. A leader of an organization who merely operates as a manager defines his or her organization. Hollingsworth (1989) said that a great leader is that individual who does the right thing while the manager simply does the thing right, thus making the leader effective and the manager efficient.

Trait theory relates leadership with qualities that people are born with, this speaks to exceptional, outstanding and self-confident people. This theory speaks to an individual’s personality and their ability to influence, inspire and impact others. The leadership ability of the individual is dependent on their personality rather than the job they do.
Skills approach involves the leader’s knowledge and ability, as stated by Katz (1955) three skills are a necessity for this type of leader. These are technical, human and conceptual, thus this type of leader had to be technically competent in the required area. This leader also has to be able to work with all types, including subordinates, peers, superiors, clients and partners. The leader has to be able to develop ideas into realties and achieve the desired outcome with the help of all who he interacts with. This gentleman has been in this position for eight months, he comes to the post at a time when the organization is undergoing review and restructure. He gave himself a mandate to as much as possible resolve internal issues that will allow the organization to operate at a high level. He always says that company’s always tend to mediocrity and one of the ways to lessen this or stave this off, is with the leadership choice for the organization.
