The summer following my junior year in high school I decided to volunteer at my community's local senior center. As a student, I have always been known to be an introvert who triple thinks every single decision I have to make. I have also lived with anxiety for many years now and worried about the simplest things. The anxiety that afflicts me has prevented me from being the typical, outspoken, loud leader. However, my decision to provide aid at my community’s senior center helped me gain a new perspective about my way of living, and it has allowed me step out of my narrow perspective of social situations.
After looking for opportunities to do community service as a way to maintain myself occupied during the summer, I found the Parlier Senior

As a matter of fact, even the main administrator is a volunteer. This means that if there isn’t any volunteers at the senior center, the seniors themselves are responsible for cleaning it, this includes mopping, washing dishes, and even cleaning tables. In my time there, I have accepted the duties of providing general assistance to the main coordinator, keeping the establishment tidy and chatting with the seniors. Personally, my favorite thing to do there is crafting and chatting with the seniors. I adore the days when I sit and paint birdhouses or ceramic sculptures while listening to the ladies’ conversations. It is those conversations that have taught me the most about myself. Up to my experience at the senior center, I had been living anxious and worried about everything; always sweating the small things. After listening to everything they’ve lived through and the adventures they’ve had in life, I learned that I couldn’t continue living afraid. Life is for one to enjoy, and it is impossible to enjoy it while being trapped in one’s comforting …show more content…
I have found myself being a lot more adventurous and slowly stepping out and away from my introverted self. The new perspective I gained at the senior center has given me the confidence to not be afraid to go out and help others, all while teaching me that it is those small, little risks and adventures you take in life that teach you the most. By sharing my experience, I have also influenced other students to volunteer there to help the seniors. This way I have assured that there will be someone to help them when I’m absent. I believe I have gained the confidence to go out and seek new, and unrecognized, opportunities. I am determined to continue walking around, only this time not letting my anxiety overcome me because after all, my youth is only temporary and it is up to me to use it wisely. The personal skills I have acquired from this incredible opportunity is what has inspired me to abandon my comfortable home for

I wasn’t sure what I expected when going to my community service for the first time. The place that I choose, the Lincoln Park Community Shelter, resided nearby the Lincoln Park, DePaul campus, so I just thought it would be an easy travel to and from the train station. Walking to the site, it was something that I’m not easily used to at home. Around there, there were clean and beautiful scenery all around. Every block I would walk pass a jogger or a person walking their dog in the peaceful environment.…

For the first time in my self-absorbed existence, I had to empathize with someone else and ameliorate another person's problems, instead of leaving them to someone else or just letting that person figure their own issues. In my desire to succeed, I had forgotten one of the main reasons I chose to be a leader: to work with and inspire others, not just hold them accountable. Reflecting on this story, I realize how this leadership role has changed my outlook on handling problems with other people because it forces me to examine others' perspectives and mandates a greater capacity for empathy. Overall, the experience of being this type of leader has been key in my personal development as an adult and has transformed my zealous competitive self into a leader that cares about the well being of those who rely upon my…

Volunteering at Veterans Affairs Medical Center was one of the greatest experience I've ever had. Sitting down with the elderly and getting to know them, I noticed if more teens could actually sit down and take the time to talk to an elderly person they could gain an opulent amount of knowledge. Sitting down and getting to talk an innumerable amount of veterans as I could, I was intrigued by how each person had a story of their own going through WWII. Voluntarily, I was able to contribute to the organization by having open conversations with the veterans, providing beverages, and having a great time. It wasn't till the end of the program when my perception began to change about the organization I volunteered for, it's more than just about kids…

According to legal scholars, the minority communities, and racialized groups have certain specific legal concerns. These include damaged esteem, violence and increased risk of prosecution. As such, they have higher anxiety and stress levels, and might easily be depressed or have suicidal thoughts. The role that culture plays cannot be underscored, particularly when it comes to influencing legal behaviors of racialized groups (Phillips, 2015). Culture directly shapes how these groups communicate and seek help, and it also influences their coping mechanisms.…

Out of all the people I met, there used to be only one person who did not change his or her opinion about me once they learned what type of community I self-identify to be a part of. If his or her opinions had an encouraging effect on me, then I usually stay in contact with those people. The people you are with can affect what atmosphere you live in whether it is a calm, friendly air or a dreadful, tense air. However, in contrast, those who had a harmful effect on me they are most likely the ones who mock me in the past. In fact, I will be honest the word itself does have a negative stigma around it.…
