Overcoming Adversity Essay

William J. Clinton once famously stated, “If you live long enough, you’ll make mistakes. But if you learn from them, you’ll be a better person. It’s how you handle adversity not how it affects you.” I find this quote to be very true based on my upbringings and experiences throughout junior year of college. As I sit here writing this essay and I can ruminate on the person I once was when I first entered Hampton University to the person I am now. The growth is amazing. I have truly blossomed. Back in 2013 I would describe myself as introvert and very transient. I vividly remember keeping to myself and not really wanting to work in large groups. I faced many challenges transitioning from high school to college. The first two semesters was rough. I thought that my grades were very mediocre. I struggled in Mathematics the most. However, I had an abundance of resources at the tip of my finger. If it was not for my advisor, Mr. Love, my stress level would have definitely taken a toll on me. Mr. Love mentorship helped me to relax, look at my options, and start action plans to achieve goals. I also joined a student organization on campus, Student Support Services, were counselors took me in as family and pushed me to my greatest potential. My junior year tested my faith and my hard work. Ms. Rhodes always would say “too much work is not healthy for your brain.” When I would tell my family and friends that I have missed meals and stayed up all night completing work. My family would scold me and say that everyone needs time to relax and reflect on what they’re doing next. The next weekend instead of being in the library I decided to go bowling with friends. I saw a major difference in my work performance that upcoming week. I was more lively and positive moving forward. My junior year has definitely shown me that I can do anything if I put my mind to

Today, June 18th, 2017, marks the last day of my first week of college at Paul Quinn College and I am proud to say, “I survived”. Committing to Paul Quinn was a really big decision for me because this school is a 17 hour drive away from my home in Brooklyn Park, Minnesota. I was afraid that I might get homesick or that I would not have the support of my family because I would be so far away from home. Soon, after visiting the Dallas campus, I realized that Paul Quinn was the school for me. This is the school where I will grow as an individual and I have come to that realization in my first week of college through the many conversations with upperclassmen, faculty, alumni and summer bridge students.…

It wasn’t until I was entering my freshman year of high school that a challenge became almost immediately life changing. Feeling as though I was climbing a mountain; not knowing if I was going to successfully make it to the top. Feeling like I was crossing a road; unknowing of what was going to be on the other side. Never had anything been so scary or so difficult to execute. I walked in to the school.…

Gazing at the grizzly bear depicted on the postcard provokes a myriad of fateful memories, and an experience which has forever altered my mentality and lifestyle. As a Boy Scout with an addiction for adventure, I craved to escape the confines of my home and pursue the open wilderness. With the companionship of my childhood best friend, I took the first flight to the last frontier: Alaska. Intending to experience as much nature as possible, we immediately forged into the unfamiliar yet beautiful Alaskan forest. Looking up from the base of the mountain, we saw a distant peak and summiting that peak became our only goal.…

Exciting story to draw in audience and transition as to why this sparked my interest in becoming a PA. Imagine waking up one morning and looking into the mirror only to see an unrecognizable, aged face. You are in a foreign house with strangers surrounding you. They insist that this is your home, and that they are your family. You have an entire history of memories, but today you cannot remember the day or even the year.…

I didn’t study much, thinking that it wouldn’t affect my grades considerably, but I was wrong. However, at the same time, I had developed as a student and as an individual. Throughout the year, I have developed as a communicator from the socratic seminar, a creative and critical thinker by making the clay whistles in art, and as a collaborator from my March Madness project in history.…

One of my unique skill is being able to adapt into any situation that I am put into. I consider this skill to be a necessity to succeed in a University setting. Throughout my community college years, I’ve been put into many difficult situation that has challenged me to think critically and to take action that would best benefit me in my education. For example, the night before my last final of Spring 2017 , I went to study in a coffee shop and I was driving back home after closing . Entering college as a student with little to no guidance of what to expect, made my transition remotely difficult. My mother completed two years of college, and my brother failed his first semester and dropped out of college, which made me curious as to what challenges I would face in this new environment. My first year I received a C and C+ in History and Pre-calculus respectfully. I was naive in the truth that I should have used office hours to solidify my understanding in these classes. My sophomore year I made another decision that would impact my academic standing by joining a Fraternity regardless of my lack of understanding of Greek life.…

Much like the majority of my peers, I began my college career as a timid, anxious freshman; however, as all of my peers began college with a multitude of friends that had carried over from high school, I began college alone. When I was a sophomore in high school, I made the conscious decision to graduate high school when I was a junior—thus, completing high school in three years instead of four. Though this move would look ambitious on my academic resume, I had failed to factor in the social implications. I had put myself into a position of attending college at the young age of seventeen, unaccompanied as a result of leaving all of my friends behind in high school, and unprepared for the culture shock I was about to receive. So there I was,…

We’ve all been known at some point in life for going to a great length to per say, get a hundred on that test or get that job you’ve always wanted. These stories are just examples of just how far some people go to survive. For instance, the Edgar Allen Poe story where it truly shows how far some people may go to survive.…

I was born a long while ago on a cold Monday morning in February. Since that fateful day, I have never stopped going. Through rushing around, joining one club or another, I never had the time to sit and relax or to sleep for the recommended eight hours a night. This hectic life of mine did not pick up until last year. There were three a.m. nights, nine p.m. school days, and never any time to do homework or to think about where I was going next.…

The style of the popular novel has changed with every new decade, but one theme has consistently lingered in the history of literature: facing the unknown. Life is entirely an unknown, which was something all too familiar to Bret Harte and Stephen Crane. These two authors are known for works in which the main character or characters must push through a point of true adversity, be it mental or physical. The resolution to a theme such as facing the unknown has always been simple in word alone; it can be described as "adaptation".…
