This applies to several characters in Barbara Kingsolver’s The Poisonwood Bible, especially Orleanna, Nathan, and their daughters. Through their sacrifices, characteristics and values become evident in these characters that would not be understood otherwise. The sacrifices made by these characters contribute to the novel as a whole by giving it depth and greater meaning, just as these sacrifices make each character’s intentions clear and presence throughout the novel more relevant. This morning the focus of my meditation was on Tamar the beautiful young virgin daughter of the King David. No doubt she was waiting for the man she trusted God would one day bring to her… I was touched by the tragic irony of Tamar’s dress. She ripped the fabric of her robe as surely as Amnon ripped the fabric of her honour. What touched me most was the inappropriate response of her brother Absalom. No doubt he loved his sister, but here’s what he said to Tamar, “Be quiet and don’t take things to heart”(2 Sam 13:20).…

In The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, Jay Gatsby seems to the public the picture of success and happiness.…

It is not what happening to my life or to those around me that effecting me deeply – it is the external forces that I have no control over or the inability for me to make a different to the situation. “Sacrifices have to be made” Acts Of Sacrifice By: Lars Jorgensen In Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe our main character Okonkwo is constantly facing sacrifices that must be made to improve the lives of his people and himself. Taking a man's life in order to not look weak is not the true meaning of sacrifice, its giving apart of you to the world around you for a benefit for you or your peers.
