Acts Of Sacrifice

In Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe our main character Okonkwo is constantly facing sacrifices that must be made to improve the lives of his people and himself. Taking a man's life in order to not look weak is not the true meaning of sacrifice, its giving apart of you to the world around you for a benefit for you or your peers.
Everyone has responsibilities that have to be carried or else some sort of consequence will occur sooner or later, and with those responsibilities come sacrifices. For example there is a quote that supports evidence “As the man who had cleared his throat drew up and raised his machete, Okonkwo looked away. He heard the blow. The pot fell and broke in the sand. He heard Ikemefuna cry, “My father, they have killed me!” as he ran towards him. Dazed with fear, Okonkwo drew his machete and cut him down. He was afraid of being thought weak.” Within the sacrifice of itself there was another, okonkwo's personal sacrifice. That is either to look masculine and kill his son or look weak to his tribesmen and not kill the boy himself. This sacrifice not only affected the boy it also affected Okonkwo's personal outlook on the situation. His ego got in the way of the decision making and after the sacrifice Okonkwo could not stop thinking about what happened. He knew that his ego interfere and that it reflected on him by
