College Athletes Should Not Be Paid Essay

Since the beginning of college sports, collegiate athletes have never been paid, even though they make the universities millions of dollars every single year. Even though young college athletes make money for the school they also still have to pay for their education, which seems unfair when they spend most of their time training for the sport itself. Most college and university athletes are now fighting for pay, due to the unfairness of the situation. Before 2009, nobody really fought for the athletes because they did not realize how hard they work and how much they take out of their day for the sports they play. Most college athletes are recruited to play for the colleges because of their great talents, and even though they are offered a scholarship they still have to pay for both their education and to play for a team that wants them. It seems unfair that they have to pay for a team that wants them and work harder than many students, early mornings and late nights, yet they receive nothing in return. Even though the athletes are not in school for monetary gain, college athletes should be paid, the coaches, announcers and everyone else in the programs are well payed, college athletes make money for the schools, and they work just as hard as the professionals.
Athletes who are students require money just like any other college students, and many of them even need it even more. According to Steve Wulf, many college athletes come from disadvantaged backgrounds (94). This…
