Collaborative Leadership This competency promotes shared decision-making along with leadership. As well, team members are accountable for their own actions and responsibilities. With a collaborative leadership approach, an individual who holds the utmost expertise in a specific area can hold a leadership role for a period of time. Therefore, leadership can change depending on the expertise needed at a given time. Task-orientation, where a leader assists team members to achieve goals, and relationship-orientation, which focuses on helping team members work together effectively, are two aspects of leadership. The bedmakers earn a six in collaborative leadership. The team had one leader, who was the supervisor. She assigned tasks to team members, communicated progress to the Residence Services department coordinators and managers, and led team decision-making. While the secondary supervisor filled this role when the primary supervisor was away, she was consulted when it came to decision-making. However, the supervisor called on team members when making some decisions and respected their opinions. The supervisor made these decisions based off of what she observed or what a few members of the team relayed to her. Although there is not a perfect formula for successful leadership, team members can support leaders and fill in gaps of knowledge that foster collaboration (Bennet & Gadlin, 2012). The bedmakers could improve in this competency by organizing formal meetings where each team member shares his/her input, which is then acknowledged and considered in decision-making. Once a shared-decision is made around the issue at hand, the supervisor can convey this to the broader Residence Services
