The study of the mind and behavior, also known as Psychology, is important to understanding human actions and thought processes that guide their daily lives and are critical in establishing relationships on both personal and professional levels. Psychology contains a wide range of focal points in assessing the mind and behavior, but for the purpose of this essay, I will be looking into one of the most recent areas of study, the use of technology (specifically apps) in learning and communication in children with Autism Spectrum Disorder.
In beginning my research, I used the JD Williams Library Journal Finder tool to search for academic journal titles that would provide the most credible information. Since I am a double major, I wanted my topic

From there, I narrowed my search by selecting the type of article I wanted from the dropdown menu. I chose Focus Review articles and selected the article “iPads and the Use of “Apps” by Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder: Do They Promote Learning?” by Melissa L. Allen, Calum Hartley and Kate Cain (2016). After selecting and reading this article, I went to the Google News search engine and searched for “ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder) language and learning” , and upon reading through a few articles, I selected the one that I felt best complimented the journal article I had chosen. In the abstract of the Frontiers in Psychology article, it states “Here we examine in which contexts learning via this medium may be beneficial, and outline recommendations for the use of electronic tablets and the design features for apps to promote learning in this population that is characterized by a unique profile of needs and heterogeneous ability levels (p. 1).” This sentence addresses other researchers and professionals who use these electronic devices to teach and those who design the apps for the purpose of teaching. The findings in this article show that children with ASD benefit from having multiple examples in learning new words no matter if it was via ipad or a book, but with the ipad, more examples are readily available. Also, ipads can be used to accommodate many different learning styles, the material can be automatically adjusted based on the child’s response, and use is not limited to a school environment which promotes learning (Allen, Hartley, and Cain, p. 6). Aside from this, ipads can be used as a Speech Generating Device that holds preference among many parents in comparisons to other alternative forms of communication.
