There are many factors when it comes to maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Through proper nutrition and exercise, the body is able to protect itself against diseases, disorders, and injury. Having knowledge about proper nutrition is a great tool to promote a well balanced diet in order to reach healthy goals. Food provides energy, promotes absorption, maintains digestion, and much more (Boron, 2009). The combination of macronutrients, vitamins, and minerals play an important role for creating a healthy, functioning body. Macronutrients are the building blocks to a balanced diet. Macronutrients consist of three necessary components: carbohydrates, fats, and protein. Carbohydrates are important for energy and proper digestion. There are three types of carbohydrates: simple, complex, and fiber. Simple carbohydrates are made of smaller molecules, which are absorbed easier, making them great for “quick” energy. Foods with simple carbohydrates would be found in energy drinks and candy. Complex carbohydrates contain starch, glycogen, and fiber. This provides a longer lasting energy source. Complex carbohydrates and fiber are also important for maintaining a healthy GI tract. Complex carbohydrates and fiberous foods would be found in whole grain and oats. Without carbohydrates, digestion would be poor and energy would be depleted (McGuire & Berman, 2013).
