Some of the main characters that helped her were Mr. Freeman, Ivy, and David Petrakis. These people unintentionally helped Melinda pass through the dead phase and into the relieved phase. She became aware that she is not sick after taking a visit to Lady of Mercy Hospital and witnessing an injured man being hurled into a room. Seeing this, Melinda proclaims to herself; " there is nothing wrong with me. These are really sick people, sick that you can see". (pg. 113). Along with that, Melinda finds the courage to confront her ex-best friend; Rachel, about the reason she called the cops at the party. This shows that, though she is nervous, she can be positive and slowly but bravely face her fears. This phase had helped Melinda realize she is a normal human being who is faced with a traumatic incident which she has to overcome
