1619
English settlers in Virginia purchase 20 Africans from a Dutch ship. They were indentured servants, not slaves. Before long almost all africans in the colonies were slaves. This is very important to the civil war, as the main point of the war was slavery, and this is where slavery began in America. July 1776
The colonies declare independence from English rule with the writing of The Declaration of Independence. Written by Thomas Jefferson, it says that "all men are created equal." This is very hypocritical as many who signed the document owned slaves, this is one main argument for the abolition of slavery as how could all men be equal if some were slaves.

1787
At the 1787 Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia, they debated whether or not to abolish the intercontinental slave trade. South Carolina and Georgia threatened that their states wouldn’t join the new United States of America if they abolished the slave trade, they won their way and for 20 years, it was illegal to try to make the trade illegal. This allowed the continued influx of slaves throughout the late 1700s and early 1800s which helped to divide the country into slave-states and free-states, leading to the deep divide that led to the Civil War.
