Causes and Prevention of Burnout in Human Services
The human service field faces a major issue of burnout among their employees. In this paper I will define burnout and describe some of the factors of burnout. I will examine my own personality and share my reactions and responses to personal and work related stress. I will also discuss my response to an employee burnout as a human service manager.

For an example, an employee may set unrealistically high career goals or expectations. Other common causes on an organizational level is more bureaucratic than flexible management philosophies, overload or low autonomy; supervision level is lack of participating in decision making; and cultural level is pervasive competition or declining feeling of community.
Prevention of Burnout Deciding what method to use to prevent burnout depends on the type of burnout observed in employees. An organization that has their employees working in same service, high stressful situations, restructuring job responsibilities to add to the employee workload is an example of appropriate method to prevent continued burnout. However, supervisors will more likely observe burnout for various reasons, so these methods may be used effectively to prevent burnout. Clarifying goals and expectations of an employees’ position can help motivate he or she and give him or her sense of purpose at work. Supervisors need to be aware of their responsibility to be a role model to employees. Frequent communication between supervisors and their staff members creates a strong social support network for anyone under stress and needs guidance. Jobs that require strict confidentiality, privacy, and secrecy can cause problems for employees, because this strong social support network is not often present in these situations. Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs) may be a good option for these individuals
