Lung Cancer is the third most common form of cancer but is the number one killer among cancer patients. Lung Cancer claims more lives than colon cancer, prostate cancer, ovarian cancer, and breast cancer combined. Cancer is an ancient disease. Mummies, some even 2,500 years old, were discovered in Peru with lumps that clearly suggest cancer as the cause of death . Lung cancer is the carcinoma that affects the lungs, which is the abnormal growth starts in the epithelial cells that line the bronchial tubes and the alveoli. There are two main types of lung cancer; the first type is small cell cancer. Small cell cancer is exclusively in heavy smokers and less common than non-small cell lung cancer. Non-small cell cancer is the umbrella term used for several different types. Non-small cell cancer includes squamous cell carcinoma, which are flat cells that line the inside of the airways in the lungs (Mayo Clinic). Lung functions are very important to the body. Single cell organisms called amoebas move freely and takes oxygen needed from its surrounding. Multicellular organisms, humans, are where cells cannot move, this means that the cells are complex circuit of vessels and specialized red blood cells that carry oxygen (Ferreiro 8). Every cancer has different symptoms and lung cancer is very extensive. Beginning, since the cancer is in the lungs there are very intense coughing which leads to a painful chest. Another symptom of lung cancer is a color change of sputum, which is a mixture of saliva and mucus coughed from the lung areas. Shortness of breath is also very common to see in people who carry the disease. A change in voice and harsh sounds are very related to the cancer because of it being the lungs. In addition, that includes recurrent lung problems. Coughing up mucus and blood is very common.
