Every person knows that if they are diagnosed with cancer it is a life threatening disease. Lung cancer happens to be the highest in deaths compared to every other type of cancer (A Revolution B-48). Wouldn't you think humans would put forth the most effort in biopsies, treatment methods, and research for this cancer? Yet surprisingly, it is not the top funded in any of these categories. Lung cancer biopsy, treatment, and research should be the first priority in America in striving for a cure because lung cancer is the leading cause of death.
The first step with dealing with any disease is being able to detect it in a practical and for sure way. Lung cancer is usually found too late to do anything about it (“Lung Cancer Screening” 1). Simply because people are not informed about simple scans. Tomography is a x-ray scan of the body to scan the lungs ( Siepmann 116). CT scans cut the chances of dying from Lung cancer by 20% (“Lung Cancer Screening” 1). These two scans done on a routine …show more content…
Smoking can make a simple tumor very complex. Tumors in smokers can contain hundreds of mutations making it difficult to fight and perform research on (Geddes 3). Cancer spreads throughout the lungs by the main tumour producing more cells and circulating through the bloodstream (Kramer 24). Research could lead to know how to stop the spread of this disease. Cancer patients with mutation ALK while taking “chemo and crizotinib” had double the survival rate than just chemo alone (“A Revolution” B-48). Patients with this mutation have pushed through the odds and are surviving longer. “In my case, it was the bottom of the ninth and two outs” This type of research has led to breakthroughs in other cancer (A Revolution B-48). Research is helping keep people alive, giving them a chance, to let them live
