Case Study: The Lake County Juvenile Facility

A 16-year old boy named Kevin has been sent to The Lake County Juvenile Facility for another three months but this is not his first time. After physically attacking his mother’s boyfriend, she decides to press charges on her own son so that she could teach him a lesson. Kevin, who has been previously charged with criminal trespassing, runaway, burglary, and battering finds himself back in the facility. Kevin threatens to attack the first person who tries to enter the cell. The facility had at least three workers there to contain him. Once they managed to take control of the situation they began walking him out. As they were in the halls, he threatened to kill himself. That is when the workers made the decision to lock him in a safe room with nothing inside, besides a paper blanket. Kevin believes acting out the way he does will eventually get him a shot at placement. Kevin began acting out at the young age of six when his father was incarcerated. The two of them were close so when his father went away that triggered something inside Kevin. His dad has been in and out of prison for the majority of Kevin’s life. His mother promised to visit every week but that has never happened. During the past three months, Kevin’s mom only paid one visit. After spending 99 days with the worker, Kevin finally got his act together and will be going to a placement facility, where he will be going to school all year round.
