Freeman defines a stakeholder as “any group or individual who can affect or is affected by the achievement of the organization 's objectives” (p. 46). The stakeholders involved in the production phase of the Birthday Cake M&M® included R&D, site operations, and the activities management team.
R&D had the responsibility of developing the actual product to be produced by plant operations. This required members of their team to come to the production site to evaluate its line capability. Operations had at least one representative at each weekly meeting to provide input, and to address any concerns or roadblocks before trials and first production runs were initiated.
The operations project lead scheduled dates for the R&D team trials, and the activities manager had the responsibility of hosting weekly meetings for the cross-functional project team. These steps were taken to ensure the project was on track for first delivery to the customers as identified in the project Charter. An important aspect of stakeholder management is in keeping external and internal stakeholders on track with the development of the raw materials, and packaging needs. These weekly meetings continued through the first week of a full production run. At this point it was determined that the project objectives for testing, production and packaging met stakeholder
