Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of mortality worldwide and it is an increasing public health burden in many countries ( Fuster, Kelly & Vedanthan, 2011). In 2012, the World Health Organisation reported that about 17.5 million of people died from CVD due to behavioural risk factors such as cigarette smoking, inappropriate diet and physical inactivity. CVD is a complex chronic condition and the patient with CVD require a long term care in their everyday life situations including at home and in the community. Therefore, literacy skills on health-related information are fundamental for those with CVD to improve compliance in self-management (Lee, et al. 2012). This essay will define health literacy and explore the elements involves how health literacy is influenced by lack of knowledge, personal skills, gender, and attitude which critically influence for men with CVD for making lifestyle modification. By looking at the principles of primary health care and health promotion, it will demonstrate how the nurse in general practice uses an education for empowerment approach on modifiable risk factor such as cigarette smoking on CVD. In 2010, the U.S. Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion defined health literacy as “the degree to which individual have the capacity to obtain, process and understand basic health information and services needed to make appropriate health decision” ( U.S. Department of health and Human Services, 2010).
