Car Accidents Among Teens in America
Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death, and injuries, among teenagers in the United states. According to Michael Muskals report from Los Angeles Times “About 963,000 drivers ages 16 to 19 were involved in police-reported crashes in the United States in 2013, the most recent year for available data. These crashes resulted in 383,000 injuries and 2,865 deaths.” Most of the teens from age 16-19 likes to drive a car, and they are the ones who gets in car accidents most of the time. The Average amount of teen drivers are way smaller than adult drivers, but more teens die from car accidents than adult drivers. All distractions put the driver, passengers, and bystanders safety at risk or in danger. This sort of distraction includes texting, using a cell phone, eating and drinking, talking to passengers, grooming, reading (including maps), using navigation systems, watching a video, and adjusting the radio, CD player, or MP3 player.
Cell Phone distraction is one of the most prevalent cause for a teen car accident. Most of the teenagers drive and text all the time, or use a smartphone for other activities. Cell phones take their eyes off the road, according to Muskal’s report,“It is troubling that passengers and cell phones were the most common forms of a distraction given that these factors can increase crash risks for teen drivers,” Los Angeles Times. Using the smartphone for social media, or to texting while driving has really bad effects on teens, or on adults. Because the brain does lots of things at the same time, shape the brain, during development are also responsible for storing information, new skills, and memories through life. That’s why driving is more dangerous for teens because the teenager 's brain is still developing. What this means is that teens under 20 years of age their brain is not devolved as much as adults. The teenager 's brain is under construction. For example, if one house is under construction people don’t live in the house until the construction is finished. The teen problem is that they can’t wait until their brain construction finished. Sometimes teens try to show off their driving skills and do some risky stuff with their car because of their under-devolvement. Adults don’t do those kinds of stupid things because they know that thing is risky. But teenagers don’t realize that, they are acting risky they just think about who’s looking at them while they are doing the dangerous action. Or make a bad decision that put them at risk.
