In the following chapters 12-13, Calpurnia (Maid) took Jem and Scout Finch to a church with colored men and women . Immediately as they walked in, these black ladies confronted Calpurnia and said, “I want to know why you bringing white children to nigger church” (Lee pg.119). This clearly shows that the black folks don’t like it when white children enter their church. Than, another colored woman named Lula confronts Calpurnia with the same rude attitude, “You ain’t got no business bringing white children here - they got their church, we got our’s. They have been known for being a scummy, poor and racist family. Throughout the story, people have had some not so friendly encounters with them. There son goes to school the first day, after that, he never shows up. The town of Maycomb despises them greatly, and has no tolerant towards them. One example is when Bob Ewell spits in Atticus Finch’s face, how rude and disrespectful. “Atticus said the Ewells has been the disgrace of Maycomb for three Generations. None of them had done an honest day’s work in his recollection. They were people, but lived like animals” (Lee pg.30).
