To Kill A Mockingbird And The Help: Movie Analysis

Discrimination is a huge problem in our society and happens almost everywhere still to this day. Statistics of discrimination say that racism hurts chances for Americans and many more races. Discrimination is so extreme that people will even be denied for jobs they apply for because of their race. In To Kill a Mockingbird and The Help there are many ways that discrimination is showcased, especially between the blacks and whites. To Kill a Mockingbird has racism in many ways especially in the Tom Robinson case which has a devastating ending. This racial discrimination ties into The Help which is also about a town struggling with racial discrimination. In Jackson they treat their maids terribly and could care less about their well being. Skeeter does not believe this is the right way to treat anyone and decides to write a book from the maids point of view. One scene from The Help that showed skeeters reaction was when all of the girls were at Elizabeth 's house and started talking about how black people should not be allowed to use the same bathrooms as the whites.(Taylor) Skeeter felt absolutely terrible about this and was shocked that they would say all of these terrible things, especially in front of Abilene. At one point she felt so bad that she personally went up to Abilene and apologised for the things that were being said. This shows Skeeters moral beliefs because she is making it very clear that she thinks that we should all be treated the same. She does not believe that the maids should be treated differently just because of their skin color. The second scene that shows how skeeter feels about discrimination is when Abilene tells her about when her son died and they just left him laying in the road.(Taylor) This upsets Skeeter so much that she instantly starts to cry. She was devastated and thought that nobody should ever have to go through something like that. This shows Skeeters moral beliefs because she doesn 't think it is right for anyone to be treated that way and it be acceptable. The fact that they are standing up for the racism that 's going on shows that very well. There are many similarities between these two stories and the events going on in them. For example Scout and Skeeter are both going out of their way to be different. They are being different because they both know that almost everyone in their towns has different opinions than they do but they still have their say in what they think is right. In these two stories there are also many differences in the way things turn out. In The Help Skeeter writes her book and by the end of the movie everyone in the town realizes how these maids have really been being treated. Also all of the maids get justice because they get to tell their stories and tell everyone how they feel about everything that has been going on . In To Kill a Mockingbird the outcome of things is slightly different. For example with the Tom Robinson case he has clearly not committed a crime and he still manages to get proven guilty. The reason for this is solely because of his skin color. Atticus and Scout both know this is wrong but their is nothing they can do about it. As a result there are many things similar and different about these stories and towns but in the grand scheme of things they are both battling the same
