Discrimination is a huge problem in our society and happens almost everywhere still to this day. Statistics of discrimination say that racism hurts chances for Americans and many more races. Discrimination is so extreme that people will even be denied for jobs they apply for because of their race. In To Kill a Mockingbird and The Help there are many ways that discrimination is showcased, especially between the blacks and whites. To Kill a Mockingbird has racism in many ways especially in the Tom Robinson case which has a devastating ending. This racial discrimination ties into The Help which is also about a town struggling with racial discrimination. In Jackson they treat their maids terribly and could care less about their well being. Skeeter does not believe this is the right way to treat anyone and decides to write a book from the maids point of view. One scene from The Help that showed skeeters reaction was when all of the girls were at Elizabeth 's house and started talking about how black people should not be allowed to use the same bathrooms as the whites.(Taylor) Skeeter felt absolutely terrible about this and was shocked that they would say all of these terrible things, especially in front of Abilene. At one point she felt so bad that she personally went up to Abilene and apologised for the things that were being said. This shows Skeeters moral beliefs because she is making it very clear that she thinks that we should all be treated the same. She does not believe that the maids should be treated differently just because of their skin color. The second scene that shows how skeeter feels about discrimination is when Abilene tells her about when her son died and they just left him laying in the road.(Taylor) This upsets Skeeter so much that she instantly starts to cry. She was devastated and thought that nobody should ever have to go through something like that. This shows Skeeters moral beliefs because she doesn 't think it is right for anyone to be treated that way and it be acceptable. Also after hearing these things she becomes so much more determined to write her book …show more content…
The fact that they are standing up for the racism that 's going on shows that very well. There are many similarities between these two stories and the events going on in them. For example Scout and Skeeter are both going out of their way to be different. They are being different because they both know that almost everyone in their towns has different opinions than they do but they still have their say in what they think is right. In these two stories there are also many differences in the way things turn out. In The Help Skeeter writes her book and by the end of the movie everyone in the town realizes how these maids have really been being treated. Also all of the maids get justice because they get to tell their stories and tell everyone how they feel about everything that has been going on . In To Kill a Mockingbird the outcome of things is slightly different. For example with the Tom Robinson case he has clearly not committed a crime and he still manages to get proven guilty. The reason for this is solely because of his skin color. Atticus and Scout both know this is wrong but their is nothing they can do about it. As a result there are many things similar and different about these stories and towns but in the grand scheme of things they are both battling the same

The texts ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’, written by Harper Lee and ‘12 Angry Men’ directed by Sidney Lumet; both display contrasting features and qualities. While both are very diverse texts, they both share an undeniable resemblance, in relation to a single person affecting a group 's idea of a just and morally right decision. Prejudice and discrimination are a reflection of how both the accused characters in either text sway opinions about which course of action is correct. Two of the protagonists, Atticus Finch and Juror 8, exemplify how a single individual can drastically change what those around them perceive to be right and wrong. Children in both texts, specifically Jem and scout, and Juror 3’s son, are also an example of how one person…

The main characters, while at times condescending towards certain colored people in their communities, are shown, in essence, to be allies of the civil rights movement. What stands out even more to me, oddly enough, is not how much they ally themselves with their colored acquaintances, but how much they verbally and emotionally oppose the townsfolk that support the conviction of the clearly innocent Tom Robinson, one of their black neighbors. Especially for people still getting used to the idea of African Americans fighting for their rights, the way the story slowly progresses and matures and darkens into a perspective that is real and almost tangible would have helped them learn the same lessons that Jean Louise “Scout” Finch, the most crucial protagonist, experiences. Her tomboyish nature, her innocent faith in the inherent goodness of the town of Maycomb, and her naivety about the lives and values of her black neighbors all ebb away for the most part, replaced with a developed understanding of the hatred and evil that is constantly being battled from all sides. This, I believe, was the intent of the author, Harper Lee. She writes, not the story that America was living, but the story that America was not living - what could, should, or would be, if her readers would open their minds and hearts. And they did. To Kill a Mockingbird changed many individuals, and society as a whole. Hopefully, we can continue this change today, because we are still fighting the same…

There are many differences between the movie and the book. One reason is the air raids were much worse in the movie. In the book there weren’t as many air raids, but when there were they weren’t nearly as bad as in the movie. Additionally, the movie has more scenes than the book. For example, the movie had two thief scenes when the book only had one. Also, some of the lines were said in a different order in the movie. In addition, some lines from the book were said by different people in the movie. Another reason is the movie had more diary excerpts than the book. In conclusion, there are many differences between the movie and the book.…

In society there are the people that stand up for what they believe in, and there are people that are scared to stand up for what they believe in. In To Kill Mockingbird and The Help, both Scout and Skeeter demonstrate the quality of showing respect for their beliefs. For example most whites lived in huge houses and had a lot of money while African-Americans lived very poor and were working as the whites maids. While Skeeter is in her early 20s, Scout is just starting her life as a young girl. Living in Maycomb, a small town, Scout faces all different types of discrimination in her everyday life. Skeeter is described at the beginning of the story as a painfully tall, not so pretty girl who lives on a cotton plantation with her parents and belongs to the local Junior League. The main idea of To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee is that picking on people who are helpless and have not done anything wrong or caused harm is a terrible thing. Whereas The Help directed by Tate Taylor is about racial prejudice and the hate directed toward blacks in respect to their race. Each story has a distinctive storyline but both share similar features and themes. For example both stories are set in the South during times of segregation. Blacks and Whites people live in separate communities, and Jim Crow laws are still very prominent. Both stories help readers get an glimpse into how different life was before racial equality was put into play. Through the feelings and actions of various characters we learn what…

“ Strength and growth come only through continuous effort and struggle”(Napoleon Hill). Skeeter throughout the book becomes accordingly more isolated from the southern women community that she's grown up with making it a struggle to fit in. This leads to her becoming self-aware of her role within the segregated society, which shocks her and moreover motivates her into writing her book The Help while changing her at first timid, unsure personality. The writing project also helps her change in personality while creating a friendship with Aibileen that never would have been possible if Skeeter hadn't have gone against the community. To Kill a Mockingbird is a great book showing how people can grow together. We have Scout and Jem growing up together in an innocent childhood growing into adulthood. We have Tom Robinson, an African American man who, is going to court with Atticus Finch (scouts father) and is trying to defend Tom against the harming white community. Tom Robinson was accused of rape of a white female Mayella. The raping of a white woman by a black man is similar to The Scottsboro Trial in 1933, where 9 black men were falsely accused of raping two white women.…
