Atticus In To Kill A Mockingbird

Decent Essays
While he respects the people around him, not everyone sees him as a good man. The primary reason the citizens of Maycomb do not respect Atticus is because Atticus defends black people. In the 1930s, black people were extremely low class people with no rights. Francis Hancock, Atticus’ nephew, calls out Atticus for defending black people and criticizes him. His own children, however, see him as a remarkable father who loves them unconditionally. Atticus takes time out of his busy schedule to give them attention and protect them. Any lawyer must protect his clients and find the best possible route around the court and its decisions. Tom Robinson, Atticus’ client, respects his lawyer because Atticus attempted to defend him and prove he was innocent.
