Throughout the first semester, different types of literature were exposed to the student through two books, The Chosen by Chaim Potok, and To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. By observing the development of the characters and the issues of the books, the superior title will present itself. Both books offered an excellent read and taught many valuable lessons. In order to unearth the similarities of the book’s topics, one must first compare them. While To Kill a Mockingbird focuses on discrimination and stereotype, The Chosen seems to teach lessons about friendship and the Jewish religion. Although racial discrimination has become scarce, examples of this unfair treatment can still appear throughout the world. By dealing with a more typical social problem, To Kill a Mockingbird makes itself more valuable than Chaim Potok’s The Chosen. The book offers examples of the subject, and ways to deal with it, while The Chosen expresses un-relatable religious arguments that prove difficult to comprehend. Multiple classmates of mine admitted to experiencing unkind behavior similar to the injustices found in To Kill a Mockingbird. They also said that To Kill a Mockingbird gave them a renewed idea of how to deal both racism and stereotypes. The Chosen had many good qualities, but To Kill a Mockingbird offered something that the readers could relate too. Not many people in the modern world deal with the complications found in The Chosen. While this book offers great lessons in friendship, it does not go as in depth as To Kill a Mockingbird. In To Kill a Mockingbird, lessons about humanity present themselves. The faults and triumphs of humanity both have a representation in this fun, exciting book. While its hard comparing books, one thing can be certain.
