The two main types of treatments are psychotherapy and psychopharmacological. Psychotherapy can teach depressed people to better handle stress and negative emotions or thoughts (Antai-Otong 56). Everything becomes a struggle and an effort for them. It can take all of one’s energy and will just to get out of bed and face another dismal day. There are two main psychotherapies for depression: CBT and ACT. CBT (Cognitive behavioral therapy) has been identified as an evidence-based treatment for individuals with depression. CBT focuses on thoughts, feelings and behavior to address distress and impairments associated with depression. This is achieved by behavioral activation. Behavioral activation is asking someone to re-engage in an enjoyed activity, which has likely decreased in frequency since the individual began experiencing depression. ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy) uses strategies that focus on living a valued existence. ACT does not try to reduce distress but rather helps individuals identify things that are valuable to them. This identifies distress as a normal human behavior and through value-based living people may find that life is more meaningful. Another psychotherapy that is less studied is IPT.
