In Andrew Solomon essay he presents the idea that depression can be a form of transformation, that the pain and suffering experienced when a person is depressed is positive, depression relive complacency, and depression help us to understand ourselves more deeply and develop in us a stronger appreciation of beauty. An example of Andrew Solomon thoughts on depression can be found in the essay Depression which can be found on page 230 in the textbook explains depression in these words “ Major depression is a birth and death: it is both the new presence of something and the total disappearance of something”. Here are some of the warning signs that the Health department says a person with depression thinking about suicide may show “talking about killing or harming one’s self, expressing strong feelings of hopelessness or being trapped, an unusual preoccupation with death or dying, acting recklessly, as if they have a death for example they made uncessery risk like speeding through red lights, calling or visiting people to say goodby, getting affairs in order for example they may be giving away there prized possessions, saying things like everything would be better off without me or I want out, A sudden switch from being extremely depressed to acting calm and happy.” If depression is a great way to learn about yourself in the eyes of Andrew Solomon how come it drives people to commit suicide because of the pain they are going through? For a person to feel so low and think the only way for them to stop there pain is for them to end there life how are they suppose to grow and become a better person if they end up taking there life and are no longer around to live it? When men deal with depression they are most likely to show some of the following symptoms. When men are depressed they are less likely to acknowledge feelings of self-loathing and hopelessness, instead men are more know to complain about being fatigue or irritability and may even have sleep issues, they may also loss interest in things that at one time used to interest them. For men that deal with depression this cant be something that someone thinks would help them out. Women while dealing with depression will experience different symptoms compared to men. Women are more likely to have feelings of guilt, excessive sleeping over heating and may even have weight gain. The symptoms that women are faced with when it comes to dealing with depression are not any better then what men may face while dealing with depression. The most noticeable symptoms of depression in teens that can be seen is irritability, anger, agitation, and complaining of physical pain. Although for teens suffering from depression deals with easier things then what both a men and a women may deal with while suffering from depression they still are not something that would make a person feel better
