Introduction

It has been highlighted that Business Intelligence and the technologies to support them have been growing rapidly over the last twenty years (chaudhuri, Dayal and Narasyya, 2011). According to Gartner (2006)

“Business intelligence (BI) is an umbrella term that includes the applications, infrastructure and tools, and best practices that enable access to and analysis of information to improve and optimize decisions and performance”.

Before performing Business Intelligence the data should be captured and organized in Data Warehouses (Lauden and Lauden, 2007). Data warehouses were described by Gupta (1997, p2) as “a data situated after and outside the operational system”. This data is valuable for all different organisations as using BI tools enables access to vast amounts of information and analyses it. It creates insights into the business and gains knowledge of it operations, customers and even their competitors therefore enabling businesses to achieve their strategic business goals by adopting its strategies or decision making to adapt to internal or external changes (Lauden and Lauden, 2007).

The purpose of this essay is to discuss the rationale behind the growth of Business Intelligence (BI) and why it is important to the contemporary organisations. Examples from a wide range of industries are given such as from health care and manufacturing of the benefits that contemporary organisations have gained from the use of Business Intelligence.
