Everyone has experienced some form of bullying in his or her lifetime. Bullying is no longer the original notions of “school bullies” who pick on the weaker children in school. Bullying has expanded beyond gender, age, social or relationship status. It occurs in the in schools and universities, in the workplace, in the community, in the family and even amongst members of our armed forces. Most often bullying is recognized amongst children as a phase, coming into one’s character or horse playing. However, these excuses are fuel to the increasing epidemic of bullying that further spreads the issue. Bullying is a negative worldwide problem, preventing children from having a fearless learning environment of success due to fear from being bullied (ERIC, 2009). It is up to parents, administrators, authority figures to recognize the aspects of bullying and its prevention in our schools and communities.

So what is “bullying”? Dan Olweus, creator of Olweus Bullying Prevention Program and author of Bullying at School: What We Know and What We Can Do created a simple explanation. He defines bullying as: "A person is bullied when he or she is exposed, repeatedly and over time, to negative actions on the part of one or more other persons; and he or she has difficulty defending himself or herself."
