Bullying has existed for decades, but the outcome of bullying is just now starting to take effect on children today. Some people may feel that we should let children hash things out on their own in order to build coping skills because bullying is a fact of life. Bullying has increased and become a harsh reality in today’s world because of lack of seriousness in schools it is a significant problem and it is causing too much unneeded turmoil across the country. There are many different types of bullying such as verbal, physical, relational and cyber bullying. Some children will turn away and not say anything out of fear that they too will become victims of bullying. “Research has demonstrated that bullying harms not only the victim, but the bully and bystanders as well…. Bullying is not the main reason why children commit suicide but it can add to the feeling of helplessness and hopelessness that raise the risk of suicide. “Fat. Gay. Or just different from the crowd. These are the reasons children are being bullied – sometimes to death – in America’s schools, with at least 14 students committing suicide in the past year alone” (Dubreuil and McNiff). Children do not feel comfortable telling their parents about being bullied at school. They usually feel that they are supposed to work it out themselves, not running to an adult who may overreact and make things worse. Parents need to invite their children to talk openly about whatever it is that is bothering them and follow through with the discussion and plans made.
